international association for shell and spatial structures

Study Groups

In parallel to sponsoring the technical activities of the Working Groups, the Association also sponsors the activities of the Study Groups. They are established in response to the most current problems and emerging trends in the shaping, design, and implementation of space and spatial structures. The Study Groups are established for a lifetime of three years. After this period, the Study Group is transformed into a Working Group if its problems prove to be permanent, or is dissolved. The Study Group usually organizes one or more technical sessions at the annual IASS symposium, organizes or co-organizes conferences and thematic seminars, and prepares state-of-the-art reports. The Study Groups conduct information activities to disseminate the current state of knowledge and attract new members.

In the table below there are links (in light blue text of the SG Title) to brief public summaries of the mission and objectives of the active Study Groups.  More details from the annual reports about the recent and planned activities, membership and publications of the Study Groups are viewable in the members-only subpage of the SG page, accessible by the link at the bottom of the public SG page. But members who are logged in can navigate directly to the members-only SG page by selecting the SG Number in the table below.

The Study Group efforts are overseen by the Technical Activities Committee (TAC), which in turn reports annually to the IASS Executive Council and the Association Membership.  The current chair of the TAC is Professor Sigrid Adriaenssens (USA). The annual reports of the TAC are available by clicking here.

Any member of the IASS may join one or more Study Groups that coincide with their expertise or interest, provided they are willing to participate actively in the efforts of the group.  In addition, Study Groups are interested in attracting nonmembers of the Association as consulting outside experts, with the hope of their eventually joining the IASS.  For inquiries about membership, contact the chair of the Study Group or the IASS Secretariat.  [If you are a member of IASS, you can obtain contact information by logging in and consulting the members-only Directory.]
