Rafael López Palanco was Professor and Head of the Department of Structural Analysis at Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura, Seville, Spain, from 1967 until his retirement in 2005. Formerly, he had served from 1959 as Professor at the School of Civil Engineering of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. A significant highlight of his career was his role as the Director of the Technical Division of the Organizing Committee for EXPO ’92 in Seville, in which he was responsible for guiding the design and construction of the many temporary spatial structures for the exposition.

Having served as Secretary of the Association from 1962 to 1974, he was elected to the Presidency of IASS in 1980 and served for two terms until 1986. For his eminent contributions to the Association as well as to the development of spatial structures Rafael López Palanco was awarded an IASS Eduardo Torroja medal in 1988.
